Hurwitz, Charles (Veterans Administration Hospital, Albany, N.Y.), and Carmen L. Rosano. Evidence for a streptomycin permease. J. Bacteriol. 90:1233-1237. 1965.-The hypothesis that an induced streptomycin permease is required for entry of the antibiotic into cells is further supported by the finding that proflavine and borate, which inhibit transcription, also block the lethal action of streptomycin. Furthermore, if ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis is permitted to proceed in the presence of streptomycin and chloramphenicol, and chloramphenicol is then replaced with either proflavine or borate, these inhibitors of transcription no longer block the lethal action of streptomycin. This finding is interpreted to mean that, if induced messenger RNA for streptomycin-permease is formed before transcription is blocked, inhibitors of transcription no longer block the lethal action of streptomycin by preventing formation of the permease.

The Escherichia coli K-12 gntP gene allows E. coli F-18 to occupy a distinct nutritional niche in the streptomycin-treated mouse large intestine.
Escherichia coli F-18 is a human fecal isolate that makes type 1 fimbriae, encoded by the fim gene cluster, and is an excellent colonizer of the streptomycin-treated mouse intestine. E. coli F-18 fimA::tet, lacking type 1 fimbriae, was constructed by bacteriophage P1 transduction of the fim region of the E. coli K-12 strain ORN151, containing the tetracycline resistance gene from Tn10 inserted ...

200 such colonies were picked from a galactose plate and, after purification through three singlecolony isolations, were tested for their ability to produce acid from all the sugars. Of these, 186 were positive on all the sugar plates. The remaining 14 isolates were unable to produce acid from any of the sugars, including galactose, and were therefore considered to have been false positives on ...
متن کاملA peptide permease mutant of Mycobacterium bovis BCG resistant to the toxic peptides glutathione and S-nitrosoglutathione.
Oligopeptides play important roles in bacterial nutrition and signaling. Using sequences from the available genome database for Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, the oligopeptide permease operon (oppBCDA) of Mycobacterium bovis BCG was cloned from a cosmid library. An opp mutant strain was constructed by homologous recombination with an allele of oppD interrupted by kanamycin and streptomycin r...
متن کاملPositive selection of general amino acid permease mutants in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
It was found that D-stereoisomers of natural amino acids inhibit the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. Kinetic and genetic evidence showed that d-amino acids enter the cell by the general amino acid permease. Two classes of S. cerevisiae mutants resistant to d-amino acids were isolated. One class of mutants appeared to be defective in the general amino acid permease specified by the gen...
متن کاملInactivation of membrane transport in Escherichia coli by near-ultraviolet light.
Evidence is presented that near-ultraviolet (near-UV) light can alter galactoside transport in Escherichia coli in several independent ways. It can inactivate the permease system per se, it can interfere with metabolic energy production or transfer, and it can cause an increase in the generalized permeability of the membrane. Earlier publications suggested that near-UV destroys cofactors needed...
